On February 23, 2024, at 3:45 pm, Trinidad and Tobago’s government confirmed the refined product leaking from a barge that struck a reef and overturned off the coast of Tobago. The origin of the ship that caused the spill is not yet known. The oil spill, pictured on February 10, covered about fifteen kilometers (about nine miles) of the coastline in black residue. An oil leak from a barge carrying up to 35,000 barrels of fuel oil. It damaged some of the island’s mangroves and threatened its tourism and fishing sectors.
