Three winter storms occurred in the first three weeks of 2024 (Ember, Finn, and Gerri). It brought severe weather to the U.S. mainland, including wind, hail, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. On Jan. 18, 2024, winter storm Indigo is moving across the country, but it is unlikely to cause such damage as previous storms. A storm called Finn led to six deaths, which also caused the winter tornado season to be high gear.
In January, there were about 39 tornadoes, and in February, about 36 tornadoes were recorded. These tornadoes were recorded to be mainly around the southern states of the U.S. because of the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and California in association with winter storms.
