Many people blame the pandemic for students’ need for more knowledge, but that’s not the only reason many students have fallen behind in the past four years.
Teachers play a significant role in what students learn. After all, they do teach us what we have to learn. Of course, many students may not have paid attention in classes during the pandemic, so it’s those teachers’ jobs to ease students back into learning.
When teachers talk at the front of the class for the whole period and miss multiple school days, it impacts students harshly. This is especially true for advanced middle school students taking high school-level classes. Some suggest it would help if you always depended on substitute teachers because your teacher is absent. But it isn’t easy to find qualified teachers anymore because teachers are not paid a competitive salary to other professionals with Master’s Degrees and years of service. The good ones leave education and work in other fields.
School systems need to do a better job of picking teachers who are committed to their jobs and love what they do, and then compensate them competitively. Everyone says the U.S. education system should be more like Finland’s. Finland became an unlikely hot topic after the 2010 documentary Waiting for “Superman” contrasted it with America’s troubled public schools.
Finnish teachers get more time to plan, more time off, and are paid more than teachers in the United States. There are few standardized tests. Good teachers are the key to our education.
