The Continuation
The ceasefire has ended between Hamas and Israel. And now it seems like the truce never even happened. Israel is resuming its air and ground assaults on Hamas strongholds, Dropping leaflets telling Palestinian citizens to leave their homes as the war returns in full force. It’s unknown when and if any more truces will be signed. Rockets are also being rained down on the Israeli side of the border by Hamas’s missile systems.
How did this happen?
This wasn’t simply “The ceasefire ended, so we’ll just go back to shooting each other.” Both sides have issued their statements. Israel claims that Hamas violated the treaty by “Failing to meet its obligations to release the hostages and launched rockets on Israeli citizens,” Prime Minister Netanyahu stated. Hamas has said that Israel asked for the release of ten female soldiers, to which they declined. They also say that Israel rejected all attempts made by Hamas to release more hostages.
What does this mean?
With the war continuing, humanitarian groups will likely be forced out of Gaza. The fighting is also likely to intensify to new levels as both sides get more desperate for the end of a costly war. Another truce shortly seems unlikely. Right now, the casualties in Palestine are estimated to be around 13,000 in total, almost two-thirds of them women and children. As of the continuation, Israel claims it only lost 77 soldiers in the ground assault at the time of this writing. Even worse is that it seems the Israelis are going to move into the south, which has held most of the population since the evacuation of the north. Where else are the Palestinians supposed to go? Well, west towards the coast. The west mainly consists of deserts, making it incredibly dangerous for those who decide to move.
