What is Frutiger Aero?
Frutiger Aero (also known as Web 2.0 Gloss) is an internet aesthetic design that was used mainly for product designs, advertisements, media, stock images, user interfaces, and technology. The term “Frutiger Aero” was named after a Swiss-type designer named Adrian Frutiger. It was created in 2017 by Sofi Lee. Frutiger Aero appeared in 2001 with the release of Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.0 and quickly grew as other devices were released. It popularized and overtook many fields in the mid-2000s and early 2010s because of its nostalgic, skeuomorphic nature and maximalist feel. Frutiger aero succeeded the Y2K futurism aesthetic, popular through the mid-1990s and early 2000s. Frutiger aero is distinguished by its mass use of skeuomorphism, glossy textures, lens flares, glass, patterns (abstract tech, auroras, etc.), aero glass, bokeh effects, frutiger typefaces, vibrant colors (usually green and blue), and nature features like clouded skies, bubbles, tropical fish, and water.

-Frutiger Metro
Frutiger Metro (AKA Flat Frutiger Aero, Vector Metro, and Vector Vomit) is a vector-based design. It is called the flat version of Frutiger Aero because it doesn’t have much depth and texture. It contains glossy textures, humanism, abstract flourishes, nature-inspired elements, gradient blocks, and bloom effects. It was popular from the mid-2000s to early 2010s.
-Vector Flourish/Vector Bloom
Vector Flourish is a mix of Vector Bloom and Vector Garden. It uses tons of vectors and flourishes hence that’s where the name came from. It also uses a lot of flower patterns, abstract patterns, and nature icons. Vector Bloom has very intricate and some psychedelic designs that sometimes indicate pseudo-3D.
-DORfic
DORfic is an acronym for “Daylight, Orange, Red, Futurism, and Graphic.” The last 3 letters “fic” is a simplified version of “graphic”. It features big amounts of abstract tech and minimalism. DORfic gained recognition in the mid-late 2000s and the mid-2010s because of its eye-catching vibrant, clean, and futuristic visuals.
-Helvetica Aqua Aero
Helvetica Aqua Aero (AKA Frutiger Aqua, Aquacore, Low Frutiger) is a sub-genre that uses lots of imagery related to aquatic life and tropical environments. This includes bubbles, water, fishes, aquatic animals, and other key elements of the ocean. There’s also stuff like glossy textures, futurism, 3D rendered objects, gradients, and tropical themes, very similar to Frutiger Aero. Popularized in the early 2000s, it was known for its dreamy, glossy, and aquatic visuals.
-Frutiger Aurora
Frutiger Aurora is a subgenre inspired by the Aurora phenomenon in the sky. The Aurora is a natural light that is displayed and illuminates the Earth’s sky, usually visible in regions near the Arctic and Antarctic. These captivating displays have patterns of bright lights that move across the sky in the form of curtains, rays, spirals, or flickering sheets.
-Frutiger Eco
Frutiger Eco is a subgenre that focuses on renewable energy and nature while featuring futurism and themes focused on the sustainability of nature. This design was popular throughout the mid-2000s and early 2010s, aiming to spread awareness of climate change while also creating hope through dreamy visuals showing a friendly ecosystem and utopian future.
