Shimizu was inspired by her own childhood memories. Including the kitten she was gifted on one of her birthdays. The inspiration also came from Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.
Where Alice plays with a black kitten. Sanrio also decided to make Hello Kitty British because Britain was trendy in Japan at that time. Hello Kitty became a cultural phenomenon.
