You enter the school library, excited for today’s after-school program. 7th and 8th graders are all relaxing on the chairs, with their noses in a book or chatting with each other about books, flipping the pages every second or so. There is excitement as your head librarian enters the room to start the meeting. The members gather around at the tables, everyone focused on the librarian’s words. As soon as the librarian gives out the question to answer, they pounce on it like hungry tigers before coming up with the correct answer.
This is the Battle of the Books After-School Club.
What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a program where students can get together to compete with other students on their knowledge about the chosen books for that year. Since “Battle of the Books” is a mouthful to say, students have come up with “BotB” instead. The competition is held every year, with a certain number of books chosen to be read by each school/team. There are 15 books this year, ranging from different genres such as fantasy, graphic novels, non-fiction, horror, and historical fiction.
Last year, 13 middle schools participated in the Cross-County Championship, with Luther Jackson Middle School winning first place. This year, 17 middle schools are joining, and the battle will take place on April 23 at Fairfax High School. All teams are preparing hard, drilling on questions and the books, (hopefully) ready by the time of the actual competition.
Battle of the Books At LJMS

Battle of the Books takes place on Mondays after school at LJMS. About once/twice a month, the team meets at the library. Mr. Hassett is our head librarian and Mr. McLellan helps us as well. There are 10 people on the official team.
As the Cross-County Battle of the Books Competition’s deadline comes closer and closer, Luther Jackson is ready to fend off their title of 1st place from last year.GOOD LUCK, LJ TIGERS!!!
