
Pelé’s name is actually Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was born on October 23, 1940 in Brazil and started his career on September 7, 1956 playing for Santos FC when he was 15 years old. He soon became famous very quickly because of his skills and talent. He combined kicking power and accuracy with a remarkable ability to anticipate other player’s moves. Pelé’s big moment came in 1958 when he was only 17, helping Brazil win their first World Cup by scoring six goals. Pelé was declared a national treasure by the Brazil government to ensure that he would remain in Brazil.
He kept playing well for Santos, winning many championships and becoming famous all over the world. Pelé also helped Brazil win two more World Cups in 1962 and 1970, making him the first player to win three World Cups. In his career, Pelé scored over 1,000 goals. He announced his retirement on October 1 1974, but in 1775 he agreed to a 3 year $7 million dollars contract with New York Cosmos. After that, he was officially retired. His skills and leadership made him a legend. People still call him King of Football.
