St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional Irish holiday. Established in 1631, it observes the death of St. Patrick, who was the patron saint of Ireland. Leprechauns, an Irish mythical creature, are a big part of St. Patrick’s Day. It is celebrated on March 17 every year and its main color is green, which represents the shamrock, which is Ireland’s national symbol. That being said, here are some fun traditions you can try on St. Patrick’s Day!
- Wearing the color green
The entire color theme of the holiday is green, so wearing green would match the vibe of St. Patrick’s Day. It symbolizes good luck. According to legend, wearing the color green makes humans invisible to leprechauns, and if you don’t wear green, the leprechaun will see you and pinch you. Other than aesthetic reasons, in my opinion, wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day just makes it a more fun experience.
2. Looking for four-leaf clovers
Four-leaf clovers symbolize good luck, faith, hope, and love on St. Patrick’s Day. Looking for four-leaf clovers outside can be a good way to spend more time outdoors and a fun activity to do with friends and family, and it also matches the color theme of the holiday!
3. Shamrock Shakes
Shamrock shakes are green milkshakes that are commonly consumed on St. Patrick’s Day. Not only do they taste delicious, but they can be found in fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s, which makes them accessible to everyone. If you want, you could even make your own, original shamrock shake with an online recipe!
4. Going to a parade or a festival
Just like many holidays, there are so many parades and festivals going during the St. Patrick’s season. Parades are a fun way to participate in the holiday, and are usually free to attend! There are normally a lot of local festivals and parades that you can attend, and it’s a common tradition of St. Patrick’s Day.
5. Irish Soda Bread
On St. Patrick’s Day, another fun tradition is to make Irish soda bread. This filling, delicious bread is very commonly eaten on this holiday, and you can buy them at your local grocery store or make it an unforgettable experience by baking one with your family or friends.
6. Listening to Irish music
Since St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday, it makes plenty of sense to listen to cultural Irish music on that day. You could listen to your favorite Irish music artist, or you could do some research online about Irish music if you don’t normally listen to it. If you go to a festival or parade, Irish music will probably also be played!
7. Dyeing a river green
This tradition started in 1962 where people colored the Chicago River green with dye. You probably shouldn’t go overboard with the amount of dye, but the dye isn’t permanent so you don’t have to worry about polluting the river. Again, green matches the theme of St. Patrick’s Day, and dyeing the Chicago river, or any river for that matter, green, is one of the most festive traditions of the holiday.
8. Irish step-dancing
Irish step-dancing is extremely fun and a way to get active. It’s a sport done a lot on St. Patrick’s Day, and now with so many online tutorials, you can participate in it! If dancing isn’t your thing, you can also watch Irish step-dancing at a parade or festival. If you don’t want to leave the comfort of your couch, you could even watch it on TV!
Whether you want to try one of the traditions listed above, or have your own unique activities you do on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s certainly a very fun and festive holiday to take part in with your loved ones. Do you have a specific favorite activity to do on St. Patrick’s Day?
