When Thanksgiving is near, families head to the grocery store for preperation. However, as people walk down aisles, they’re presented with a daunting decision: Should you get turkey or ham?
Turkey
This bird is most closely associated with Thanksgiving and is the choice of most families.
Pros
For starters, turkey is generally cheaper than ham, making it the best choice if you want to save on costs. Additionally, grocery stores also have sales during Thanksgiving.
What about taste? While turkey can be considered bland, it tastes much better when combined with other side dishes, like gravy! Turkey also has different types of meat. Some peoples’ favorite part could be the lean meat, while others’ could be the dark meat. The varying types of meat make dinner a more inclusive event.
For those who are health conscious, turkey provides more vitamins and protein than ham. It also has much less salt than ham. You can say that turkey is healthier, but if you eat 5 pounds of turkey for the benefits, it’s not exactly “healthy” anymore.
Cons
In the oven, your turkey needs a LOT of attention and maintenance. Adding on, one single mistake can make your Thanksgiving dinner a much worse experience for everyone else. Even if you do get it down, it’s still a stressful task.
Ham
It may not be the most popular choice, but ham does have a few advantages.
Pros
Ham is easier to cook when compared to turkey. This makes it the ideal meat for less experienced chefs that are in charge of dinner.
At the table, it’s considered a lot tastier and juicer than turkey. Furthermore, while turkey has varying types of meat, ham has a lot of different types, variations, and customization. It’s likely that you’ll find something that you and your family will enjoy.
While turkey has more protein, ham has more zinc and potassium.
Cons
Ham is more expensive than a regular old turkey, especially if you’re buying it cooked, sliced, or boneless.
Once again, for the health conscious, ham has a LOT of salt. And when paired with other salty side dishes like gravy? Then you’ve created a nightmare loaded with salt. Ham also has more fat than turkey.
The Final Decision
For those looking for a less stressful Thanksgiving? I’d go with ham. For those looking for a traditional Thanksgiving and are making a lot of side dishes? I’d go with turkey.
For me personally, I’ll be having both.
