There are many interesting places in the world, but have you wondered which ones are the most wondered of? Today, we will be cover all of them, starting with the temple of Artemis. The temple of Artemis is a Greek temple used built to worship the Greek goddess of child birth and hunting. It was built in the near by the ancient city called “Of Ephesus” which is in Turkey. Sadly the temple was burned down in 356BC by a man named “Herostratus” which he set the wooden roof-beams on fire. Now, only a couple of fragments are left at the site.
The pyramid of Giza has 3 pyramids and they are the only seven wonders of the world that are not destroyed. They are located just outside Giza; Egypt and it is about 481 feet tall. All the pyramids have Royal Tombs of each pharaoh.
The pyramid that is the most north and the oldest pyramid out of all of them was built for Khufu, it was the tallest structure for thousands of years and were made around 3200 BC.
The statue of Zeus of Olympia is a huge seated figure that is about 41 feet tall. And the construction was finished around 430 BCE but it was destroyed a little before the 6th century. Emperor Theodosius ll banned the games that the area held in 426 and the temple got closed but some people say that it was burned down. Surprisingly the statue only took around 8 years to be built and it was special because it was considered “a version of the god on earth.”
The lighthouse of Alexandria is located in Pharos, Alexandria, Egypt and was made around 280 BC. It has an estimated height of 330 feet tall and it has been up for about 1,500 years. Sadly it got destroyed by an earthquake but you can dive down underwater to see its remains. The lighthouse was very special, even though it is not the first lighthouse made, it still became famous because of its complexion and then it became one of the seven original wonders of the world.
The hanging gardens of Babylon is a beautiful building with different kinds of plants hanging down the sides of the structure. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon made it as a gift for his wife that was homesick of her native media. In 226 BC the temple was destroyed by an earthquake. We are not fully sure if the hanging gardens of Babylon were actually real or just a poetic creation. The structure is one of the seven wonders of the world because of its exotic nature of the gardens compared to the familiar Greek items.
The mausoleum at Halicarnassus is a pyramid shaped structure that stands about 140 feet tall and has a circumference of about 440 feet. It got destroyed by earthquakes from the 12th century to the 15th century. The structure was mostly made of marble and survived for about 17 centuries. Building the mausoleum at Halicarnassus took about 40 years to complete and had about 24 steps and 36 columns. At the top there was a pyramid roof and it’s special because of its immense marble structure, large detentions, sculptures, and architectural beauty.
The colossus of Rhodes was a sight to behold, it was a huge statue that was at the entrance of the harbor of Rhodes which is a representation of the sun god Helios. It was built around 280 BC and took around 12 years to finish but the statue was destroyed around 296 BC by an earthquake. The colossus stood around 30 meters high which is roughly the height of the statue of liberty without her pedestal. Some people believed it straddled the harbor but it was just a myth it actually stood on the other side.
And those are all of the seven original wonders of the world, but sadly they were mostly destroyed and replaced by a new set of seven wonders of the world. Hopefully this enlightened you on great but lost history, because it is very interesting and should be studied by the younger generation.
