Have you ever seen a black checkered scarf wrapped around somebody’s head? Have you seen more and more people wear a wrap around there head? Are you confused? Well, let me help you understand, no worries! The keffiyeh is a traditional Arab head-dress typically worn by nomadic communities. It was used to help farmers/lower class people who worked in the sun, protect themselves from heat. Although keffiyehs come in so many different patterns and colors, over the last century the white black checkered version has long been a symbol of the Palestinian people. When Palestinians realized there home was going to be given away by the British they resisted. They would cover their face with the keffiyeh to hide their identity when attacking British soldiers. They would run back into the city and hide between crowds, but everyone else/upper class citizens wore hats, so the keffiyeh was easy to catch. So then Palestinians realized, if EVERYONE wears a keffiyeh, then the British soldiers wont be able to catch their fighters. So that’s what they did. Today, people wear the keffiyeh out of solidarity or because its apart of their culture(Palestinians)
