How does the Presidential Election work? In order for a president candidate to become the president of the United States they must get the majority of electoral college votes. Electoral College is where each state a certain number of voters to vote. There are a total of 538 total voters and the candidate needs at least 270. In addition to winning the actual election the candidate has to go through multiple stages of debates, campaigning and they have to win the primary vote. Each political party selects one candidate to represent that party in the election. The primary votes are what decides who the candidate is.
