Everyone tends to become overwhelmed and stressed at times. Whether it’s the SOLs or the deadline for a big paper, stress is inevitable. The only thing we can change is how we react to it. Here are some tips to better cope with stress:

Stressed about an upcoming test or big event? These strategies can help:

  • Positive Self-Talk. This can help you get more motivated.
  • Count to 10. This can help you calm down and feel more in control of your stress.
  • Take some deep breaths. This can help you regain focus on the task in front of you.

Need to calm down? Though counting and taking deep breaths can help you calm down, they are short-term, meaning the effects will last only for that specific activity or job. Long-term strategies can help you be calm for longer periods of time. Here are some strategies that can help:

  • Meditation or yoga. You are focusing your attention and eliminating any thoughts that are causing stress. This can produce a deep state of calmness and tranquility.
  • Listen to music. Classical and piano music can be very relaxing and can reduce stress or anxiety.
  • Take a relaxing bath. This can help you relax and take a much-needed break.

Need to clear your head? Doing these activities can help:

  • Exercise. Exercising can help your body feel better and in turn, your mind.
  • Go outside. Fresh air can really help you relax and think clearly.
  • Read a book or make an art project. These brain breaks can help people relax.

Need to pour your frustrations out?

  • Keep a diary/journal. Writing down your thoughts can relieve you of the burden of carrying them around. A diary will keep even your darkest, deepest secrets.
  • Talk to someone, Sometimes, a diary doesn’t do you justice. Sometimes, you need someone to talk back and give their opinions. It can be helpful to talk to a trusted adult, like your parents, teachers, or school counselor.

Next time you’re feeling stressed, try using one of these strategies and see if it helps!
