A group of Cornell engineers has been developing a new type of programming that acts like that of an insect. To mimic the behavior of an insect would take an entire desktop computer on the robot’s back for it to function. However, Silvia Ferrari, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Controls, used neuromorphic computer chips to drastically lower the size.

To speed up the development, a doctoral student named Taylor Clawson created a virtual simulator. The simulator models the robot force it takes for every wing stroke. This lets the simulator predict the robot’s movement through complex environments
