First Ever Monkey Clones

First Ever Monkey Clones

By: Jasen Vu

The first ever cloned monkeys were born in a lab in China, using the same technique used to make Dolly the sheep. Scientists say they will be useful for human disease research since they’re genetically identical. The first named Zhong Zhong was born 8 weeks ago, while the second named Hua Hua was born 6 weeks ago.

Many other mammals have been cloned using this process. These clones, however, are the first non-human primates cloned using it.

It took 79 attempts for them to get the cloning right, and two other ones they cloned died.
