Alex Honnold is the first ever free solo climber to scale up Yosemite National Park’s 3,000 foot mountain, El Capitan. Alex was born in Sacramento, California. He was motivated at the age of five by famous climbers like Tommy Caldwell, John Bachar, and Peter Croft. When Alex was ten years old, he was climbing up walls in a gym a few times a week. Alex Honnold worked on climbing his whole life. He lived in a van driving around to different sites in Yosemite National Park to climb. Alex became pretty known throughout the U.S. for many climbs he did on various mountains in Yosemite National Park. Then, Alex wanted to do something that had never been done before. Looking at El Capitan, he was going to try to free solo it. He was nervous when he first looked at the mountain, but Alex Honnold was determined to free solo the mountain. Finally, on June 3rd, 2017, he was able to do what no other person could do. He free soloed El Capitan in just under four hours.
