Ever wondered what your dog is saying? Maybe Daisy wants to play with the ball you keep in your room. Maybe Pumpkin wants to go run outside. Well, with this new technology, it may just be possible.

Dr. Con Slobodchikof has been studying prairie dogs for more than 30 years and has developed an algorithm to turn the sounds from the prairie dogs into English. He even founded a company called Zoolingua that will try to translate the sounds and behavior of pets into English.

Having the technology to communicate with animals could help us in many other ways as well. It could help farmers and ranchers identify sickness in the flock, or stop dogs from being euthanized.

This is an example of technology that could allow us to understand animals better.

This relates to engineering because all sorts of people and technology were combined into the goal of understanding animals. They had to engineer a mechanism, test it, then improve on it. This would also benefit others, which engineering strives to do.
