How Do Locks Work?

How Do Locks Work?

By: Jaydon Bingham

Their are hundreds of different locks used in our everyday lives. We use extremely complicated locks that open with fingerprints, special electronic keyboards, simple locks that can open with a key, or a combination. We are going to be focusing on one simple and common type of lock, pin-and-tumbler locks. At our school, we use combination locks for our lockers and our gym lockers. In a normal pin and tumbler lock, there are several spring-loaded pins. When a you push the key in, you push the spring-loaded pins up just the right amount. This allows you to turn the cylinder, which opens the locks.

This relates to the engineering world because their are hundreds of different locks used in our everyday lives. We open our iPhone’s fingerprint lock or combination locks. At school we open our lockers with combination locks. When we come home we open a pin and tumbler lock to get into our house. Its in our everyday lives and many of us don’t know how to use them.
