Is Fortnite Stealing Content?

The popular battle royale game, Fortnite, just launched its Season 8 update. With this update came cannons, new map locations, a volcano, and most importantly, leaked files.

One of these leaked files includes a picture of a vehicle with a hologram of a player on top. The Fortnite community is interpreting this as a respawn system, a feature unique to another popular battle royale game, Apex Legends. This is proof that the programmers at Epic Games, the company that makes Fortnite, needs to copy things from other games in order to keep their game alive and relevant.

A popular argument that has been claimed by people who are defending Fortnite is that Apex Legends was a rip-off of Fortnite, so they deserve to be able to take some ideas from Apex. The problem with this claim is that Fortnite was actually inspired by its predecessors like H1Z1 and PUBG. Epic Games was actually sued by PUBG Corporation for copyright infringement. The only reason that Fortnite has evaded other lawsuits from the creators of these games is the fact that they “expressed the ideas differently,”, so they are able to keep Fortnite as it is.
