To help retain heat, almost all houses contain insulation. It looks like pink wool, or is sprayed on like a foam. A research group called Empa, have created a type of insulating brick. This would eliminate the need for the pink, or foam insulation in houses. The bricks are hollow and filled with a material called aerogel. It is made from a gel in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas. Along with being lightweight, it works as a very effective form of insulation.  Another benefit is that they will keep houses even warmer than with the insulation they already have. The bricks are called Aerobricks, and might just become the next big brick in the construction world.

This is related to engineering because they group developed a solution to a problem, which is the main point of engineering. They also had to be creative and come up with a way to make effective insulating bricks. This relates to engineering because in engineering you often have to create or figure out a new way to create something.
