        With a multi-character password to lock and unlock your computer becoming obsolete, a team of researchers have developed a system that only unlocks for the unique signal of a user’s heart.

It only needs about 8 seconds to scan a heart’s size, shape, and rhythm the first time, but afterwards it will continually monitor the heart remotely. The system poses no health risk and should be impossible to fool, as no two people with identical hearts have ever been found. Since it’s entirely passive, and needs no input from the user, they just need to be near their PC to unlock it. As it’s constantly monitoring users, it will not yield to a different person if the current owner isn’t around. This means people won’t have to worry about logging out when the get up and leave. The preliminary tests showed the system was 98.61 percent accurate, with an error rate of 4.42 percent.

This relates to the engineering world because people are always getting past locks, but this lock is much harder to get past with hacking or simple lock-picking. Since locks are so incredibly common, from unlocking your house to unlocking your phone or laptop. This lock can is harder to hack than a fingerprint or other locks. The only problem is that the error rate could cause a serious problem. So I believe this technology could be very useful in the future, when the error rate will be improved. This is also really beneficial as it gives off no radiation. This technology could be used all around the world for hundreds of different purposes.
